The Vagus Nerve: What It Is and Why It's the Key to Calming Anxiety

If you've spent any time in the wellness space recently, you've probably encountered the vagus nerve. It's been called the "wandering nerve," the "superhighway of calm," and the key to unlocking the body's natural anxiety relief system. But what is it actually, how does it work, and — most importantly — what can you do to harness it?

This guide cuts through the hype with a clear, science-grounded explanation of the vagus nerve, its role in anxiety, and the most evidence-backed ways to stimulate it for genuine nervous system regulation.

What Is the Vagus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve and the longest nerve in the body. The name comes from the Latin word for "wandering" — and it earns that name. The vagus nerve originates in the brainstem and travels down through the neck, chest, and abdomen, branching to connect with the heart, lungs, oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, kidneys, and spleen. It is the primary communication highway between the brain and the body's major organ systems.

The vagus nerve is the main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" branch of the autonomic nervous system that counterbalances the sympathetic "fight or flight" response.
